Can you really make money blogging?
Today I wanted to share with you as a blogger the answer to the common question, “Can you really make money blogging?” How many mom bloggers out there feel the constant pressure to post these amazing, easy to read BEAUTIFUL blogs with zero time to get around to it? And I mean ZERO time.
That’s currently how I feel. I always have a TON to do with two kids and summer being over, I am being swept back up into the hustle and bustle of back to school. Which equals less and less time to do what I love the most, write. Blogging is my creative outlet and I truly love and enjoy writing for my audience. This makes me happy. But, that doesn’t answer the question of, “Can you really make money blogging?” So, let’s dive right in.
Is blogging really worth it?
Having a blog has been amazing and fulfilling to me as a stay at home mom, trying to start a side hustle to help my family with the bills. As much as I love writing how to’s, tips, and advice for my amazing subscribers, it’s time to take you guys along with me on my blogging journey. The truth is, I should have done this since day 1 but I was always worried about what others may think of me. I’ve been blogging for quite some time now and I’ve gotten to really learn the basics of it.
Truthfully, I’ve been having some doubts if I am actually cut out to be a blogger. Even though blogging is truly a difficult journey to the newbie, it’s worth it in my opinion. I love learning and taking notes, and that’s exactly what you need to do in order to become a successful blogger. You need to commit to your website which is now your online business and where your voice can be heard. So, yes I would say blogging really is worth it.

Having blogging support is so helpful.
The other day I was talking to a really great blogger friend of mine Cynspo when I was feeling super down and wondering if I should keep up with blogging. Needless to say, she really helped me feel so much better! I may be overwhelmed, but writing is my passion and I’m going to continue to do blog, and start adding my voice to my site. She encouraged me when she told me I have a sparkle in my content and her words really resonated with me. It’s time to continue on with my blogging, regardless of the negative thoughts going on with me and quit trying to write the perfect piece of “advice or how to.” Blogging isn’t about being perfect, it’s about letting your sparkle into this world.
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of blogging and the truths nobody wants to talk about or admit aloud, and let’s answer the question, “Can you really make money blogging?”
Blogging is time consuming.
Blogging is very time consuming, to say the very least.
There’s a lot that goes into this, especially if you know zero about websites, which is so ME! Without a doubt, this has felt like such a long journey to me. However, a blogger reaches the point where either you LOVE what you do and continue on with no stops, or you simply part ways with the idea of your own website.
The amount of time that goes into Pinterest is crazy! I’m pinning a lot and sometimes it gets to be too much, even for me and I love Pinterest! I’m always looking for hairstyles and cute nail inspo, but to pin daily feels like job after a while. And if you aren’t making any money from it, it can get a bit tedious and boring. Taking several breaks helps me, but don’t quit pinning the things you love to pin or search for. It’s easier to pin when you still love what you’re pinning and searching for.
WordPress is beginner friendly to a blogger.
It’s hard to make money blogging if you know nothing about websites!
Look, I am not trying to be fake here and say blogging is super easy, because it’s NOT. Building your following isn’t easy, either. It’s a job that takes time. Writing to me, is the easy part. I feel like the difficult part is actually making a living off having a website. A lot of bloggers are optimistic that I am friends with and I truly admire that. I’m going to quit getting all wound up about the money making blogging pins I see EVERYWHERE. Because as much as I’d love to make money off my site, I need to study more about that and figure out how to do so. But not knowing much about websites and technology certainly has limited me. Also, not having enough time to learn because of my 2 kiddos. I have WordPress and their customer service representatives are so helpful and kind. They truly help you when your website is in a pickle. You can get WordPress here: WP Engine – 3 months free on annual plans!
How do bloggers make money from blogging?
Being completely honest with myself has taken a weight off of my shoulders!
Here’s my tip for all those mothers out there trying to make a LIVING off of their websites, KEEP ON WRITING! I mean, write your book! Nobody has inspired me more than Jenni, another fellow blogger who’s already written her book. You can find her here. She’s a mama of 2 and has written her book, never putting SO much pressure on her world to make an income off of her site. She has the right attitude. It’s hard and it takes a lot of learning, patience, and time! You have to really work at it and it takes awhile. There’s no shame in admitting the truth. Blogging struggles are REAL and happen to everyone.
Reach out to a fellow blogger for help.
Be patient and strong. Learn and then get to know some bloggers.
Reach out to them. I’m doing that next. Asking just any blogger for help isn’t going to get you anywhere. You need to do your research and you will certainly be able to ask for tips and help if you build a relationship with bloggers. However, if you don’t want to actually follow, become friends, and show some love by sharing their blog posts and shouting them out, I’m not sure if they’ll give you sound advice. Even so, I’ve seen quite a few give out lots of helpful advice, regardless of the shoutouts. I have decided to blog about this whole money making journey, step by step to you! Mrsplanahead is meant to be a place where you should feel I’m always 100% honest and willing to share the truths about blogging and I’m excited to finally document everything.
Loving to write is key to being a blogger.
You need to be a writer and actually love writing, learning, and reading.
Loving to write is a must and it honestly really helps if writing comes to you easily. Of course, you don’t need to be the best writer out there or a published author, but you do need to enjoy reading and writing to love blogging. If you want blogging to be your career and to do this long term I’d make sure your love of writing is there DAILY. I don’t need my phone or laptop with me at all times to write. I’ll end up grabbing a piece of paper or journal and let it out. This writing process is daily to me. Even if I didn’t have my website I’d still be writing a book or prayers, I really have a love for writing that doesn’t disappear for any type of time.
Making money isn’t easy if you don’t know what you’re doing.
The popularity starting out doesn’t come fast or easy, as many people advertise it to be. Having followers and subscribers are necessary for your website to keep going, not just page views. You need your audience. However, it doesn’t help you if you have 0 twitter followers. Eventually, you may want to advertise your book and more twitter/Pinterest followers could mean more subscribers that are interested in the book you may be selling or affiliate links. Anyhow, it takes time to gain subscribers and popularity amongst Instagram or Facebook.
I hope this answers your question as to, “Can you really make money blogging?” ! Blogging is not that easy or simple. It’s actually pretty complex, especially if you know nothing about websites. Don’t feel bad about not knowing, but don’t give up. There are so many helpful courses out there that are free! Start with those and work your way up. Nothing can occur without hard work and learning. And then learn some more!
Until next time,
